3: Repair Damaged Surfaces

Before painting, fix any surface damage. Fill cracks or holes with exterior-grade filler or caulk. Replace rotted wood or warped siding. Ignoring these issues can result in uneven coverage, bubbling paint, or premature deterioration of your new finish. Loose or peeling paint should be scraped away using a paint scraper or putty knife. Sand down rough spots to create a smooth, even surface. Be sure to wear proper protective gear, especially when working with older homes where lead-based paint may be present.

4: Protect Surrounding Areas

• Use high-quality exterior paint – Investing in premium paint ensures better coverage, color retention, and weather resistance. Cheaper paints often require more coats and can fade or peel much faster, especially under direct sun or heavy moisture
• Work in sections – Plan your painting process by working in manageable zones, especially if you’re painting solo. Breaking up the project prevents rushed results and allows you to maintain a consistent application, especially around trim, corners, and edges
• Mind your ladder safety – Always place ladders on stable, level ground and never overreach while working at height. Consider using a stabilizer or spotter when working on uneven terrain. Safety should always come first – injuries are not worth the shortcut
• Label and store leftover paint – Keep a record of color names, brand, finish, and room or section used in case you need touch-ups later. Store paint in a cool, dry place with the lid sealed tightly to extend its shelf life
• Paint during the right time of day – Aim to paint in the late morning or early afternoon when surfaces are dry and temperatures are stable. Avoid painting in direct sunlight or late in the day when dew may start to form
